Villages – Montalbano Elicona
Scritto il Saturday, 27 March 2010
Beauty often lies in remote corners in Sicily. Far from the main cities, and almost unknown to most tourists, several villages still maintain an atmosphere that will reveal you the magic of the island. Montalbano Elicona is a small village in the Province of Messina. Close to the Nebrodi Mountains park and also to the Peroritani , it has today a population of 2,600.
Once you get there, you won’t miss the magnificent castle built in 1233 by the Emperor Frederic II, while you will easily get lost in its medieval streets: every corner will show you the real life of an ancient village and reveal a beautiful landscape of secular forests that surrounds the village.
Of course, you will get the possibility to eat great food here: don’t miss the traditional salami, pecorino cheese, the sun-dried tomatoes and olives that every small restaurants will serve you. Enjoy a glass of red traditional wine, take a walk and breath. You’ll be immediately feeling home, and love Montalbano Elicona.
